Catherine's Annual Festive Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes
Her Royal Highness has organised her yearly festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The 1,600 guests will enjoy a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Centred Around Love and Generosity
The theme of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Musical Talent and Access
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to young musicians supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the organisation, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at tonight's service.
"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.
A Family Affair
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.
That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for food banks.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
